Robbie Ross...In the 'Mysterious Case of the Missing Marksman'....?!

Southgate County Super Vets 7 v 2 Old Finchlean’s Super Vets (Aldeiri x 3, Ross, Hassan, Anderson D, OG)
After the disappointment of the last couple of cancelled fixtures County Supervets opened up 2019 with a convincing win over our annual opponents Old Finchleans.
The midfield of Anderson (The Jeff), Bateman, Aldeiri & Brown quickly established control & with Anderson (Matrix) & Ross providing the cutting edge up front we looked dangerous.
Malik opened the scoring with a great header from a Ross cross & had a second with a low drive into the bottom left hand corner from another good move.
Robbie then turned from provider to scorer after good interplay with Brownie, cutting in onto his right foot & curling a peach of a shot off the inside of the right hand post.
That was his last act of the first half as he took a well-earned break & let Hassan in on the act. Another good move saw Hassan provide a good cross for Matrix to slide in & tuck it away.
County hadn’t had it all their own way, with Lovett, Lewis, Dickinson & Wingrove making a number of timely interventions & Watt clearing up anything else from the goal line. Whoosh indeed rolled backs the years with a number of no nonsense challenges that Wilmott would have been proud of.
However, Finchleans finally got their just deserts with a good flick on from a free kick that found the back of the net.
So, a fairly even first half but County had been much more clinical taking a 4-1 lead in at half time. County had been fairly rusty in the first half & so the half time talk from Cliffy ‘The Major’ Lovett was all about looking after the ball, playing it simply & not giving it away easily.
Lamont surrendered the whistle to Stumpy after a great first half as ref (may be a future career there Colin?!) & came on at left back, with Brownie taking a rest for Kirk.
After playing the first half with the wind we were expecting a bombardment in the second, but this didn’t materialise. County cut out the mistakes and, as Finchlean’s legs started to go, took control with some of the best passing football seen for a long while from the Vets or Supervets.
Finchlean’s countered by playing a high line & looking for the offside from the ref, Stumpy ‘myopic’ Wingrove. However, County soon picked up on this & we started to spring their trap almost at will. Hassan & Aldeiri had a number of opportunities as did Ross when he came back on for Bateman, but a combination of fantastic keeping & poor finishing kept the game still competitive.
The pressure soon told & Aldeiri got his hat trick with a drive through the legs of the keeper & then Oppo scored an own goal from a Hassan cross.
Aldeiri picked up the whistle for the last half an hour as a reward for his hat trick allowing Wingrove to run up & down the wing for a while. A number of opportunities came & went for County with Hassan providing the coup de grace with a fantastic drag back to fool the keeper after being slipped through by Ross.
So, a fantastic game of football played in a great spirit where the younger legs & better football of County won the day. However, they may not be the memories we all go away with…. 2 absolute gems of moments spring to mind provided by Messer’s Lovett & Ross which should go down in the annals of County history…
Cliffy having seen Robbie & Ish waltz through the Finchlean’s rear guard on a number of occasions without making it count, so, Captain ‘Intrepid’ thought that he’d shown them how it was done, receiving the ball at right back he breezed (doddered) past the midfield, slipped past the defence with a dip of his zimmer frame & before he knew it he was high up the pitch, one on one with the keeper…. The resulting nose bleed must have put him off as he couldn’t quite cap this majestic run with the goal it deserved.
However, Robbie ’the Hitman’ Ross featured in the ‘Mysterious case of the Missing Marksman’. Ross, having seen the high defensive line, ran the ball from our half through the defence, leaving their centre backs high & dry. As he approached the centre spot he curved his run to bring his favoured right into contention, when out of no-where he was felled by a sudden sniper’s bullet… he went down like the proverbial sack of…. & ball trickled on to their keeper….
An extensive search of the grounds was conducted but no signs of Russian Spetnaz, SAS, Navy Seals or other special forces were found. The mystery continues….
