Southgate suffer defeat despite glimpse of comeback

UCL 6 - 3 Southgate County
(J Thirgood 3)

Southgate travelled to UCL in London Colney, in the hope of a slight improvement on our spanking at the hands of Mayfield the week before. Some miserable weather taking away from what is usually the fixture everyone looks forward to at the beginning of season.

Another last ditch run to the pitch by the keeper Wayne Deering left a few worrying and debating who is next in line, but we managed to kick-off just later than planned with a strong squad to choose from.

Special mention to the awful events in Paris on Friday night and our thoughts go out to everyone involved. Great idea from Ryan to ask the ref for a minute silence before kick-off, which was well respected by everyone.

We didn’t quite turn up for the first 25 minutes of the game and UCL were allowed to play their usual passing football and find gaps behind our defence. They kept probing down the right wing and on 15 minutes managed to get a good cross between our centre backs for an easy header to the far post for 1-0. Another decent move from UCL soon after saw them score a quite ridiculous back-heel volley to the top right corner. 2-0. We were giving UCL too much space all over the pitch and their centre mid was able to dictate play too easily. We were made to pay again on 25mins, when a similar move to the first goal for UCL saw them drive a low cross across the box for the striker to slot home for 3-0.
It was starting to look like UCL could run away with the game now and horrible memories of last week’s thrashing must have come rushing back, but credit to the team we kept at it and started to put pressure on their defence, with James Thirgood driving a good finish to pull it back to 3-1. We started to creep back into the game and managed to get on the front foot for periods, with James Thirgood scoring a great curler from outside the box to make it 3-2 before half time, with UCL there to be had.

The second half saw debuts for new boys Syn Kiese and Ryan Wanga and we started ready to keep UCL on the back foot. We spent a lot of the first 5 minutes of the half in the UCL half and managed to grab the equaliser when Michael Cohorst's low driven shot was fumbled by the keeper and James Thirgood was able to pounce for his hat trick. Optimism was high, but slowly as the half went on UCL rediscovered some of their first half form and were able to put their stamp on the game with a brilliant header to make it 4-3 and two more followed to put the game to bed in the final 20 minutes.

A disappointing game because it felt like we could have got something from the game given the comeback from 3-0 down. On a positive note, we showed great spirit to pull it back, but starting slowly has become a bit of a common theme last few games and we need to be more switched on and work harder throughout to make sure we can win these games when we have periods on top. Man of the match was James Thirgood who gave us a chance with his well-taken hat trick and looked up for it from the off.

Team; Deering, Blake, Kerby, Bellinger, Coehorst, Frame, Woodward, Thirgood B, Georgiou, O’Leary, Thirgood J, Hall, Kiese, Wanga.
